The 12th Global Hands-on Universe Meeting will occur in Porto Alegre, Brazil, on 22nd to 29th, July 2009.

Social Program:

Tour to Gramado and Canela

Saturday July 25, 8 AM to 8 PM.

Gramado and Canela are two small towns situated in the mountainous region of Rio Grande do Sul. The cold climate in the winter (sometimes it snows), the beautiful natural parks with waterfalls, the bavarian architecture, gastronomy and handicraft are some of the attractions of the cities.

Price: around R$100,00 (not included in the registration fee). Includes a complete meal (colonial coffee), and ticket to Caracol Park.

Suggestions for your Sunday in Porto Alegre

 

Morning:

Brique da Redenção in Farroupilha (or Redenção) Park.

Next to the downton UFRGS campus. Take a bus or taxi from the hotels,

 direction: downtown (Centro). Located in   bairro Bom Fim.

Brique has typical handicraft goods.

Snack: Baihana´s stand: sweet and salty Tapiocas, Acarajé. Typical food from

                                       Salvador-  Bahia. Coconut juice.

Snack: Gaucho´s stand: sugarcane juice,  typical salty muffin of codfish

                                      (Bolinho de Bacalhau) or pumpkin sweet (Doce de abóbora).

 

Lunch:

1)Typical local vegeterian restaurant: on the side street of Santa Terezinha Church (right at Brique). Occupies part of the Church building

2)Arab (Sirian-Lebanese tradition):  Al Nur, Protásio Alves Av., 616. Walking distance from Brique.VEJA Porto Alegre

3)Pagoda: chinese food adapted to Brazilian taste.Protásio Alves Av., 440.

4)Shangai, traditional chinese food. Protásio Alves Av. 623, in front of Al Nur restaurant.  Walking distance from Brique.

5)Galeto (chicken, pasta): typical italian immigration food in Porto Alegre: Mamma Mia Restaurant, Rua (Street) Gaspar Martins (no number needed, just a block), a short taxi drive from Brique..

6)Cachaçaria Água Doce: typical central and south east Brazil food. Brazilian liquors like cachaça and caipirinha. Adress: Carlos Gomes Av., 1581. A short taxi drive from your hotels zone. 

 

Afternoon:

Exposition Art in France 1860-1960: Realism.  Picasso, Van Gogh , Renoir and several  other painters. MARGS (Art Museum of Rio Grande do Sul)   10h to 19h. Adress: Praça (Place) da Alfândega, downtown. Free. Praça da Alfândega is the birth place of Porto Alegre.

Boat trip Cisne Branco on Guaíba lake: leaves frequently from the downtown dock, next to Praça da Alfândega. Visits the Wild life park  Delta of Jacuí.

Another possible Boat: leaves from the dock at Gazômetro Cultural Center (where the tall  Chimney is located). Downtown, not far from Praça da Alfândega.

Walk by the beaches on lake (River) Guaíba: from Gazômetro to Harmonia Park. Closed avenue on sundays for walking and biking. Leads to the  large shopping mall Praia de Belas (in case of rain).

Sunset on the Guaíba shores: if clear or a bit cloudy, the sunset plus landscape  is considered one of the most beautiful in Brazil. If clear, you may

sight the rarely observed green flash, as the  sun´s last  ray.  Best place at Gazômetro.
